Karaage chicken, but McDonalds style
Trader Joe’s, whyyyyyyy!!!! First thing, this chicken isn’t bad. I actually like it more then several other frozen options, and the sauce is pretty good too. But this is NOT kagaara chicken! Any other name and I’d like this more, but its so misleading. Blessed to have lived in Japan for awhile and loved it there, and still grab frozen bags at Mitsuwa/H-mart/small Asian marts. This is not kagaara 🙁 Lets dive in and see what this chicken dish is, an dis not.
Package and nutrition
Crispy seasoned dark meat chicken you say? Well, it is mostly that. The image on the bag doesn’t even look like usual kagaara which was the first flag. Nutrition is high for fat/sodium/cholesterol but for a fried chicken dish expected. Staying within one portion and pairing with lots of veggies is key–all about balance! The sauce for this is actually good–not something you’d eat with kagaara usually but works for this. Wish it came with the boom bah shrimp–wayyy better for fried shrimp too. Worth the extra to use the sauce.
Can you say chicken Mcnugget?
Again–it doesnt taste bad! But if this was your first time trying Kagaara please please please try it again. Grab a bag at an Asian super market or order it at a restaurant, you deserve to try a real version. I think its the breading, completely gives Mcnugget taste and looks. Its not that crispy fried goodness it should be, its the Mcnugget version. And I like Mcnuggets! Which is why I like this, it’s there dark meat version. But just not how it was advertised :/ Made me feel sad inside and just not what was expected……but also didn’t taste bad.
and the rating is……
6/10 :/ They’d get a 7 if the name was different, but so misleading. It’s dark meat chicken Mcnuggets with a pretty good dipping sauce. Go into it with that mind set and it works, actually a good deal if you like Mcnuggets price wise! Get way more bang for your buck with inflation prices lol. Pretty tasty, but please please please don’t judge all chicken kagaara based on these–there just dark meat nuggies.
